GIMP is short for "GNU Image Manipulation Program." Gimp is a FREE software raster graphics editor often described as a "retouching and editing tool". Used for high-end graphics as well as icons and web graphics. What really makes it stand out is the degree of complexity which can be achieved in a FREE application, as opposed to Adobe Photoshop, widely recognized as an important tool for raster graphics editing (and my favorite in fact), yet comes with the hefty price.
