Adobe's Acrobat is a digital document capture and distribution system. Like MS word or Wordperfect documents you can read the result. However Acrobat (pdf's) can be made effectively read only, making it ideal for long term records of memoranda, reports, books, etc. The files can be passed around and downloaded off the internet. Pdf's are commonely used by private individuals, comercial business, and governments around the world including the U.S. Government as the digital document file format of choice. One critisism is that the files are sometimes not well compressed, resulting in enourmous files which if the document had been in another format like dejvu *.djvu or *.djv the resulting files could be much smaller. One of the trade up's in favor of Acrobat is the extra features that can be included like menues, interactive tables of contents, interactive indices, and high resolution images or cover pictures for books.
